This small upgrade can give your shutters a whole new look with minimal investment to your time and finances. However, it is important that you follow the correct steps, so you don’t end up with a mess on your hands.
Here are our best tips for successfully painting your shutters a new color:
- Select the right paint. Ideally, look for something oil or water-based, though latex paint will also work fine.
- Get your shutter ready. To avoid getting shutter paint on your house, it’s best to fully remove the shutters. This is true even for functional shutters that you can swing away from your siding — it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
- Lightly sand. Using a fine grit sandpaper or sanding sponge, gently sand your shutters and then clean off any remaining dust.
- Apply your first coat. Some people swear by using a paint gun to spray on the paint, while others prefer just a good, old-fashioned paint brush.
- Let the shutters dry. It’s important not to rush this step, so you may even want to consider waiting until the next day. Just make sure your shutters aren’t leaning against each other.
- Sand again. sand off any areas that aren’t smooth and remove remaining dust.
- Apply your second coat. Let it dry and see what you think. At this point, the paint color should be even with none of your previous paint showing through.
